How Does Public Relations Differ From Advertising?

As a business owner, your main goal is to get your services or products in front of as many people as possible. Two ways in which to accomplish this is through advertising and public relations campaigns. While both are aimed to accomplish similar goals, public relations campaigns can be successful and more cost-effective, especially for small to medium sized businesses.

Advertising is a popular method for business owners to get their products noticed. You see them everywhere, in magazines, on television and online. Business owners are given the opportunity to make any claim they see fit to try to sell their products to consumers. Advertisements are not required to be newsworthy nor are they based on working with media professionals. Anyone can create and place an ad for a price. While on the topic of price, the price for advertising can be very high and can quickly drain an advertising budget.

A public relations campaign is a well thought out marketing strategy that is based on working closely with business owners and media professionals. Public relations campaigns consist of writing and distributing newsworthy press releases. Consistent contact is made with key media professionals at magazines, web sites, blogs and television. Unlike advertising, the type of exposure that comes from a public relations campaign is more valuable than advertising. Public relations campaign are a smart investment for most businesses, and will cost a fraction of what it would cost to advertise in any number of national publications.

How Do I Sell My Products?

Easier said than done, right? Selling your products is the reason that you're in business. But how do you get people interested? The market is tough, consumers aren't spending the money they were a few years ago, and the competition is fierce. What's a small business owner to do? Here are a few easy steps to help you through.

  1. Tell consumers what it is that makes your business and your products different. Focus on your products' different features. What makes you stand out? Use that as your selling tool.
  2. Reach out to your customers through social networking. Use Facebook and Twitter to let current and potential customers know of changes on your web site, new products, sales, and the likes.
  3. Work with the media. Get local coverage to start, followed by regional and national. Reach out to blogs that discuss products like yours.
  4. Write a press release and get it posted online. Better yet, feed the wire services and specific media contacts, where you'd like to see your products featured, a steady stream of press releases -- just make sure they're newsworthy and have a specific announcement. Press releases need to provide news. If you use them as advertising tools, be assured that editors will simply hit the delete button.
Get started today and enjoy the benefits of seeing your business begin to thrive!
